Man killed in police fire in Espoo

A man was killed when police fired gunshots at him at Niittykumpu area in Espoo early Saturday night, police said.

It was the second death in police fire in the capital region within a span of two months.

The incident took place at about 3:00 a.m. at the stairwell of a residential building at the locality.

Police said that they rushed to the spot responding to an alarm about threatening behaviour of the person.

The person, equipped with knife did not pay heed to the police orders and move toward the police, which prompted them to use service weapon.

At certain stage, a police officer fired gunshots at the man to stop him resulting his death on the spot, said police.

Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased and describe the details situation of using the firearms at the initial stage of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office is investigating into the incident of using firearms by police.

Earlier on July 12, 2025, a man was killed when police fired gunshot at him at Alppiharju area in Helsinki.
