Finnish leaders on Monday expressed profound shock at the death of Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.
President Alexander Stubb, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in separate posts on their social media platform X expressed their condolence after the demise of Pope Francis.
“Today (Monday), the world is mourning the loss of Pope Francis. Pope Francis will be remembered for his work against poverty and social injustice. His legacy will comfort those in mourning,” the President wrote in his post.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo wrote that he was saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.
“I had the honor of meeting Pope Francis in 2019, with other founding members of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action. I send my condolences to the Holy See and all Catholics in the world,” Orpo added.
“My sincere condolences to all Catholics around the world on the passing away of Pope Francis. His call for peace and justice remains more important than ever,” wrote Valtonen in her post.
Pope Francis died Monday at the age of 88.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on Dec. 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Francis was head of the Roman Catholic Church since 2013.
