PRESIDENT SAULI NIINISTÖ had a video conversation with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, on Wednesday.

It had been a while but the presidents had, according to the Finnish president’s office, “a good discussion on bilateral relations between China and Finland, which were described as stable and long-standing.”

Bilateral dialogues and visits have resumed after the coronavirus pandemic. The presidents acknowledged the constructive dialogue between the two countries on the Baltic Sea pipeline incident,” the presidential office noted. The presidents also discussed bilateral economic cooperation.

President Niinistö and Xi also discussed in detail the global geopolitical situation and the importance of great power relations.

President Niinistö raised the issue of the war in Ukraine and its wider implications.

Niinistö emphasized China’s role in achieving a just and lasting peace. The presidents agreed on the importance of genuine, constructive and cross-regional dialogue in solving and preventing global problems.

They also discussed the need to combat climate change and cooperate on material issues. The presidents also discussed EU-China relations, including recent developments and challenges.

President Niinistö thanked President Xi Jinping for the many important and frank bilateral discussions over the years and hoped that the high-level dialogue between the two countries would continue.
