2 killed in train-van collision at level crossing in Siilinjärvi

Two people were killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Siilinjärvi, a municipality under North Savo region on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The accident took place at about 1:00 p.m. when the van knocked down the Oulu bound passenger train coming from Helsinki at Ruuskalantie level crossing.

The driver of the van, a 57-year-old man and a passenger, 59-year-old woman died on the spot.

Two dogs in the van also died in the accident but none of the train was injured.

Responding to an alarm, Rescue Service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of the victims.

Police did not divulge the detail identities of the deceased but said that they are Finnish nationals currently living abroad.

The accident disrupted rail communication on the track for several hours.

The Accident Investigation Board and Police are investigating into the accident to find out more information in this regard.
