SDP tops in popularity keeping Kokoomus far behind

The main opposition party in the parliament Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) remained as the most popular party in Finland with 25.8% support keeping the ruling Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) far behind, according to the latest polls by the national broadcaster Yle released on Thursday.

The popularity of SDP increased by 1.1% from the last month´s survey and reached to the highest level since 2006.

Kokoomus, the largest component of the four-party alliance government secured second position with 19.2 percent support, which is also slightly higher (0.1%) than the previous survey.

Another opposition party Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party of Finland) remained third in the popularity list with 14.7% support. Its support dropped by 0.4%.

The radical rightist Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party), the second largest component of the alliance government placed fourth with 12.8 percent support, followed by oppositions Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) with 9.5 percent support and Vihreä Liitto (Green League) with 7.7 percent support.

Popularity of Perussuomalaiset increased by 0.5% while the popularity of Vasemmistoliitto and Vihreä Liitto decreased by 0.6% and 0.9% respectively compared to the survey result in the previous month.

Two other components of ruling alliance Suomen Kristillisdemokraati (Christian Democratic Party-CD) and Suomenruotsalainenkansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) placed seventh and eighth with 3.9 percent and 3.5 percent supports respectively.

Research organization Taloustutkimus conducted the survey through interviewing 2,266 people from August 11 to September 2 and the margin of error is ± 2.1 percentage points
