A man died when police were arresting him at Vihti, a municipality in the Uusimaa region on Monday evening, police said in a press release on Tuesday.
The incident took place when the police handcuffed the man and were trying to pick him up after local people had handed him over to police on charge of stealing a car.
At certain stage, the man became senseless during the arrest.
Responding to an alarm, emergency service people rushed to the spot and declared the man dead.
Earlier local people caught the man when he was allegedly trying to beat a bystander and trying to steal a car.
They called police and handed him over to the members of the law enforcing agency and the death took place when police were arresting him.
Police, however, did not divulge the detail identity of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office is investigating into the police action in this regard.
Helsinki Police are investigating into the case to find out the reason behind the death.
Police also filed a criminal report regarding the attempted robbery.
