Finland will send F/A-18 Hornet fighters and staff officers to NATO's annual nuclear deterrence exercise 'Steadfast Noon' taking place from October 13 to 24, said Ministry of Defence in a press release on Friday.
NATO's deterrence and defence posture is based on an appropriate mix of nuclear, conventional and missile defence capabilities, complemented by space and cyber capabilities.
The fundamental purpose of NATO's nuclear capability is to preserve peace, prevent coercion and deter aggression.
"Nuclear deterrence is part of NATO's everyday work. Finland participates in NATO's nuclear planning and policy-making, and therefore it is natural that we also join NATO's annual nuclear exercise. Finland sends combat aircraft and staff officers to the exercise", said Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen in the press release.
Steadfast Noon is part NATO's annual routine and recurring training activities. The exercise does not involve any live nuclear weapons.
"Finland's defence is ultimately supported by the military power of the entire Alliance, including its nuclear deterrence. Nuclear exercises ensure the credibility, effectiveness, safety and security of NATO's nuclear deterrent. This also increases security in Finland," Häkkänen added.
