4th death at level crossing in less than 2 months

A woman was killed in a train accident at a level crossing in Turku late Saturday night, police said.

It was the fourth death at level crossing within a span of less than two months and sixth death in train mishaps in two and a half months in Finland.

The accident took place at about 8:00 p.m. when the train knocked down the young adult woman at Tampereentie level crossing. She died on the spot.

Responding to an alarm, Rescue Service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the victim.

Police, however, did not divulge detail about the accident but said that the identity of the deceased could not be known.

The Accident Investigation Board and Police are investigating into the case to find the reason behind the accident.

Train and vehicular movement remained suspended on the level crossing for a while due to the accident.

Earlier on August 3, 2025, two people were killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Siilinjärvi, a municipality under North Savo region.

On August 5, 2025, one person was killed in a collision between a train and a van at a level crossing in Loimaa, a municipality in Western Finland.

On September 21, 2025, one person was killed in a train mishap in Vaasa while another person was killed in a train accident in Helsinki on July 18, 2025.

Frequent accidents on the level crossings in early August 2025 have raised questions about the safe vehicular movement through the crossings in Finland.
