Police suspected three men of their involvement in the alleged rape took place in a cruise ship of Viking Line on its way to Sweden from Finland in between late Friday and early Saturday nights, Southwest Finland police said in a press release on Wednesday.
Police, however, released the suspects from the custody on Wednesday as there was no legal ground to keep them arrested.
Earlier on Monday, Police released one of the suspects after the preliminary investigation as they did not find his involvement in the incident.
The suspects allegedly abused a woman sexually in a cabin of the ship named Viking Grace in between late night of October 17 and early night of October 18 during their journey from Turku to Stockholm.
Swedish police arrested four people after the ship arrived in Stockholm in connection with the incident but later released them and handed the case over to Finnish police as the suspected crime took place in the territorial water of Finland.
The suspects returned to Finland in the same ship onboard and police arrested them on Sunday on charge of aggravated rape.
The Southwest Finland Police are investigating into the case and now suspecting involvement of three persons.
“One of the men was released on Monday after it became clear that he had no involvement in the incident. The suspects are all in their twenties,” said lead investigator Jutta Karrento in the press release.
Police interrogated the suspects, the plaintiff, and witnesses and carried out technical investigation.
