US citizen faces charges in Vastaamo data breach case

The prosecutor office filed charges against a national of United States for his alleged involvement in the in the Psychotherapy Centre Vastaamo data breach.

The prosecution has brought charges of aiding and abetting attempted aggravated extortion in a new investigation of the Vastaamo case, said an official press release on Monday.

Although the prosecutor office did not divulge the detail identity of the suspect and said that the suspect is a 28-year-old foreign national, local media reported that the suspect is an American living in Estonia.

The attempted aggravated extortion was committed between 28 September and 23 October 2020 and targeted the Vastaamo psychotherapy centre, said the prosecutor office.

The suspect, however, denies the charges brought against him.

The prosecution submitted application for a summons to the District Court of Western Uusimaa on Monday.

The pre-trial investigation report in the case will be made public during the hearing of the case before the court.

In addition to the application for a summons, the prosecution has decided to waive charges of aiding and abetting the dissemination of information violating personal privacy, the victims of whom were Vastaamo's clients.

Earlier in May 2025, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) suspected the person for his involvement in the Psychotherapy Centre Vastaamo data breach.

The person is suspected of aiding and abetting aggravated extortion and aggravated dissemination of information violating personal privacy.

It is suspected that this person was involved in the preparation of material for the extortion targeted at Vastaamo and participated in the attempted extortion against the company and the dissemination of sensitive customer information on the internet.

Earlier in April 2024, Western Uusimaa District Court convicted one person named Aleksanteri Kivimäki in this case and sentenced him to 6 years and 3 months in prison.

Police in February, 2024 arrested Kivimäki from a private apartment in Helsinki.

In 2020, Vastamo announced that sensitive information about its clients was leaked after its database was hacked.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been investigating into the incidents since autumn 2020.

The board of the psychotherapy centre Vastaamo in October, 2020 terminated the centre’s Chief Executive Officer Ville Tapio following the large-scale data hacking.
