Rauma Port operations disrupted after wartime bomb recovery

A suspected wartime aerial bomb was found during dredging work of Rauma Port on Wednesday afternoon, which disrupted normal operations and movement of vessels at the port, police said.

The explosive object was detected at about 1:00 p.m. and the authority informed the police in this regard.

Responding to the alarm police rushed to the spot and informed the Finnish Defence Forces about the situation.

Members of the law enforcing agencies isolated the area and instructed to suspend the normal activities, dredging work and movement of vessels in the port on safety ground.

They also escorted the people to go outside of the danger area in cooperation with the port authority.

The Border Guard officials assisted the police to control the vessel traffic in the port area during the operation.

An expert team of Finnish Defence Forces arrived at the scene and recovered the bomb and transported it to a safe palace.

Based on its material, size, condition and shape the Defence Force officials initially identified the explosive as a wartime aerial bomb.

Later normalcy was restored after the port area was declared safe late Wednesday night.
