Majority Finnish MPs for recognition of Palestine as state: Poll

The majority of the lawmakers in Finnish parliament support recognition of Palestine as a state, according to a survey commissioned by the national broadcaster Yle.

According to the survey result, a total of 107 lawmakers out of 200 responded to the survey and 61 of them support recognition of Palestine as a state while 32 opposed.

Fourteen of the respondents, however, either did not decide the issue or declined to make opinion in this regard.

Most of the lawmakers belong to opposition parties supported the recognition while most of the ruling parties MPs opposed it.

Two components of the four-party alliance government- radical rightist Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) and Suomen Kristillisdemokraati (Christian Democratic Party-CD)- strongly opposed the recognition.

Earlier, President Alexander Stubb in May 20024 said that Finland would recognise Palestine as a state at some point in the future but did not specify any deadline.

Pointing out the recognition moves by Britain, France and some other European countries, he recently said that it would be good for Finland to be on the right side of history.

As of March 2025, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 147 member countries of the United Nations out of the total 193 member states.
