Finland resumes handling of Syrian asylum applications

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) will resume processing the asylum applications submitted by Syrians, said Migri in a press release on Friday.

The Migri suspended making decisions on asylum applications from Syrians in December 2024 because of the considerable changes in the security situation in Syria.

“As part of our decision-making, we have monitored the developments in the security situation in Syria both on national and international level. On the basis of country information, the security situation has stabilised to a level that allows us to resume the decision-making that was paused following the changes in the country information,” said Antti Lehtinen, Director of Department for International Protection.

At the moment, the Migri has 320 pending asylum applications submitted by Syrians.

The need for international protection is always assessed individually, taking into account the country information gathered both internationally and nationally.

The decision-making regarding asylum applications from Syrians has recently been resumed in some other EU countries as well.
