President Sauli Niinistö, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen on Saturday expressed condolence at the deaths of people in earthquake in Morocco.
Niinistö sent a letter to King of Morocco Mohammed VI expressing his deepest condolences for the devastating earthquake, said the President Office in a twitter post on Saturday.
“Deepest condolences for the devastating earthquake in Morocco. Our thoughts go out to all victims and their families,” Prime Minister Petteri Orpo wrote in his twitter.
Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in a twitter post also expressed profound shock at the earthquake victims in Morocco.
“Deeply saddened over the loss of lives and the devastation in the Morocco earthquake. My thoughts go out to all victims and those families who have lost their loved ones,” Valtonen wrote in her twitter.
At least 1,037 people have been killed in a strong earthquake that jolted Morocco on Friday night, reported Xinhua, quoting the country's Interior Ministry on Saturday.
The earthquake has also injured at least 1,204 people, according to the latest update from the ministry.
The 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Morocco Friday at 11:11 p.m. local time (2211 GMT) at a depth of 18.5 km, said the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near the town of Ighil in Al Haouz Province, some 70 km southwest of Marrakesh.
The earthquake was felt in many cities across Morocco, including Rabat and Casablanca. Many houses collapsed in the cities of Taroudant and Marrakesh, local media reported.
