Finnish Customs has investigated an aggravated narcotics offence involving a person suspected of ordering about five kilograms of cocaine from the United States to Finland, said Customs in a press release on Thursday.
The potent narcotic was distributed mainly in Eastern and Central Finland.
In July 2024, Customs seized a postal parcel that arrived from the United States and contained three kilos of cocaine. The parcel had been addressed to a man living in North Karelia.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the person in question had received a similar package some time before, and we suspect that it contained two kilos of cocaine. The street value of the consignment of cocaine that we seized in its entirety and established in the preliminary investigation is at least one million euros after processing,” said lead investigator Marko Laitinen.
The seized cocaine was exceptionally potent, as it had a 90 per cent content, and would have produced up to 60 000 street doses.
“Our investigation indicates that narcotics were distributed mainly in North and South Karelia, as well as Central Finland,” said Laitinen.
In addition to aggravated narcotics offences, the preliminary investigation has uncovered standard narcotics offences and a firearm offence.
Criminal charges are being considered in the case.
Customs also cooperated with the Eastern Finland Police Department in the preliminary investigation.
Last year, Customs seized a total of 53 kilos of cocaine, a quantity that is significantly higher than the 16 kilos in 2023.
