2 held for entering Finland crossing Russian border

The North Karelia Border Guard on Saturday held two foreign nationals for entering Finland after crossing Finland-Russia border illegally at Ilomantsi, said the Border Guard.

The authority suspected that they entered Finland from Russia on foot.

A hunter found the two foreigners on the road and gave them a lift and later informed the Border Guard.

Responding to the call, the Border Guard officials rushed to the spot near about 20 kilometres from the border and arrested them.

The Border Guard, however, did not divulge detail identities of the detainees but said that they applied for asylum in Finland.

The authority is investigating into the incident as border crime.

Earlier in September 2025, one person was held for entering Finland crossing Russian border.

In July 2025, the Southeast Finland Border Guard also held a man for entering Finland after crossing Finland-Russia border at Vaalimaa.

Finland continues to keep Russian border closed for sine die since December 2023 following Russian invasion of Ukraine.
